From theoretical considerations, stability criteria for solid propellant burning behavior are derived; analysis considers transient temperature field of solid subjected to cosine pressure perturbation in gas stream; results indicate that modes of propellant burning behavior are influenced by variation of temperature field within solid propellant; effect is represented by C denoting dimensionless initiation time parameter; theory shows that for different values of C, initially stable propellant will burn in unstable manner; theory indicates range in propellant parameters for which unstable burning always occurs.
