Symmetrical ballistic-type re-entry bodies often exhibit erratic roll behavior during flight; to explain phenomena, roll characteristics produced by mass and aerodynamic asymmetries were determined by numerical solution of equations of motion and by analytical solution; lateral displacement of center of gravity and of pressure, inclination of principal longitudinal axis to body geometrical centerline, unequal pitch and yaw moment of inertia about principal axes, and asymmetric aerodynamic moments were considered; all, except for inclination of principal axis, produced significant roll torque, and asymmetries produced roll-rate histories similar to those observed on flight records.
