Analysis is made of long-period (phugoid) oscillations of lifting vehicle in hypersonic flight up to and including orbital speeds in any atmosphere; oscillations correspond to direct exchange between kinetic and potential energy along oscillating flight path governed by trimmed steady-state zero pitching moment; it is found that decrease in gravitational attraction with altitude overcomes effect of decrease in atmospheric density with altitude so that with increasing speed phugoid period asymptotically approaches corresponding satellite orbit period; expressions are derived for so-called "short period" or angle-of-attack oscillations.
