Studies of separation dynamics of spin-stabilized satellites and probes indicate possibility of unbalanced moment disturbances during separation process that result in excessively large nutation or coning motions of body in its free flight; paper shows linear acceleration at point away from center of mass on spinning body may be used as driving force for damper system; spinning vehicle equations of motion, including motion of sliding mass, are derived; solutions of resulting fourth-order differential equations for angular rates, and numerical results are presented; approximate design formulas and test program used to verify damper action.
