Assessment of performance of various types of helicopters ranging from pure, semicompound, compound, and stowed-rotor helicopters; flight-research programs conducted by helicopter industry with military-agency support to evaluate operational suitability are reviewed; it is shown that direct operating costs for commercial helicopters have been greatly reduced by increasing cruise speed and payload and reducing maintenance requirements; cost of 31 cents per available seat mile for 1948 aircraft has been reduced to 8 cents per available seat mile with current helicopters; improvement will continue to value of 4 cents per seat mile for helicopter of 1970.
