South African road system, its size, traffic which uses it, past investment and current expenditure on it is outlined; work of National Institute for Road Research on road accidents which was carried out with object of defining those areas requiring most urgent investigation is described; comparisons of accident rates with those of other countries indicate South Africa's very high fatality rate.
