Relative merits and disadvantages of stagnation and vortex immersion aircraft thermometers for subsonic flight are discussed and also importance of correct location and alignment of probes on aircraft and to air stream during flight; additional problems encountered during supersonic flight, with emphasis on shock wave phenomena, are considered to show why immersion type sensors are not considered to be accurate indicators of free air temperature at any but lowest supersonic air speeds; some of nonimmersion radiometric techniques are discussed.
