It is noted that it is just 50 yr since construction of first tank during World War I, which makes it opportune to consider stage reached in tank development and to evaluate contemporary tank designs; features of designs added in last 2 yr are indicated; probabilistic approach to evaluation, which involves estimating probabilities that tanks will successfully accomplish their battlefield mission, or certain phases of it, is advocated and outlined in relation to tank armament systems; problems of battlefield survival and of availability of tanks in time and space are discussed.
