Methods used by General Motors Defense Research Laboratories in lunar surface locomotion analysis are applied to evaluation of locomotion systems; approach consists of following steps -- missions to be performed are specified; operational requirements are laid down; physical environment together with its variability is determined; vehicle configurations to be studied are evolved; vehicle performance parameters are calculated; cost/effectiveness of various configurations for variety of environmental conditions is estimated from vehicle performance parameters; optimum configuration is determined; how to evaluate ability of vehicle configurations to meet military needs is shown.
