Adoption of rubber as means of improving riding qualities of rail vehicles; although possibilities offered in eliminating noise by using resilient wheels were apparent, adoption was made difficult by fact that vacuum assisted brakes employing standard brake blocks are used for service and emergency braking, as against dynamic braking used with street cars; problems encountered by adoption of resilient wheels examined; theoretical mathematical design.
