Paper traces progress of development of passenger locomotives on New York Central System from heavy Pacific type of 1925 to latest combination passenger and freight design of 1940, showing continued demand for increased power and methods used to satisfy requirements; possibilities for further improvements in near future without departure from conventional reciprocating design suggested.
