Shipbuilding reached new peak of peace time production in 1940, with 56% increase in output and 150% increase in tonnage under construction; naval construction increased 353% and merchant ship construction 67%; further shipbuilding program of 200 cargo vessels, each of 7500 tons, all of one design, to be built immediately at total cost of $350,000,000.
