Three experimental 4000 hp diesel-hydraulic locomotive units built by Krauss-Maffei in Munich, West Germany, for Southern Pacific and 3 for Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, incorporate propulsion system not currently available in United States; prototypes are being road tested in heavy duty mountain freight and expedited freight service to develop their potential under operating conditions; fundamentals of diesel-hydraulic design, interesting engineering features incorporated, and test program conducted.
