Basic principles, terminology, solution of analytical problem, and applications of magnetohydrodynamics are discussed; concept of magnetic containment is now being applied to very high temperature plasmas (188 K) which are required for controlled nuclear fusion; other applications include direct power generation and control of hypervelocity flight vehicles; mechanical and aeronautical engineers have proposed names magnetogasdynamics and magnetoaerodynamics; more general and all inclusive term, magnetofluidmechanics, was suggested by Theodore von Karman and is becoming widely accepted.
