Investigation of behavior of railroad ballast and sub-ballast by Japanese Nat Railroads; installation of new type Vibrosir for laboratory tests with model track; series of tests confirmed that under dynamic loading, settlement of tie is mostly affected by ballast acceleration and amount of settlement can be minimized by increasing ballast depth or by using suitable sub-ballast; merits of sand sub-ballast and coarse slag sub-ballast.
