Optical instrument to obtain data for stratospheric temperature-inference computations uses 25-in. focal-length, 16-in. diam spherical mirror, and 5-in. sq diffraction grating arranged in modified Fastie-Ebert layout; laboratory model is undergoing test program at Meteorological Satellite Laboratory of U S Weather Bur; next phase of program is construction of high-altitude balloon flight model to test performance of instrument.
