Principal use of constant-tension winches is on vessels plying Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway, where locks and canals must be negotiated without assistance of tugs; winches must check way on vessel and, after mooring, maintain constant selected tension on mooring lines, winches heaving in or paying out with rise or fall of vessel in lock; principles are also applied to docking and towing winches; design and operation is described.
