Increases in ships' speeds, with rising complexity of modern weapons systems, have sharpened need for improved experimental ship testing facilities for Royal Navy; new facilities at Admiralty Experimental Works, Haslar, are described; rotating arm mechanism has working radius of 20-90 ft, can tow models weighing up to 2000 lb at about 40 mph; maneuvering basin, which contains rotating arm, is also used for free running experiments on radio controlled models; sea conditions are simulated by 2 sets of wavemakers.
