There has been considerable modernization and reconstruction, stemming largely from changeover from riveting to welding and increased ship dimensions; innovation in steel working, prefabrication, changing crane arrangements, optical marking and use of computers are factors; new yards in West Europe and Scandinavia can build tankers up to 100,000 tons dw; building docks vs slip and launching ways are considered.
