Japan has led world in tonnage of launched ships for 5 yr following 1956, Jan-Sept 1961 launchings being 1,276,000 gross tons; there are more than 300 shipyards in Japan constructing steel vessels, but only third can build ships of 500 tons or over; 19 companies and their 24 dockyards (listed), produce about 90% of steel ships; remodeling and repairing is also undertaken; new techniques have been introduced, and licensing arrangements made for production of main machinery in addition to domestic products.
