Current required by bare hull is considerable and it is therefore imperative that cathodic protection should work with paint system; by using impressed current techniques it is possible to overcome difficulties found with sacrificial anodes; exact amount of current required can be given out by controlling current output of electric generator, and it is possible to position anodes around ship and to insulate them from hull so that there is only small voltage gradient.
