Site for lunar base will be established through surveys made by Surveyor- and Prospector vehicles, with final appraisal made with Apollo spacecraft; factors to consider in selection of site show that polar lunar base may perhaps be superior to nonpolar one; important consideration for lunar base at poles would be retention of heat by surface structures during intermittent sunlight or fluctuating shadow levels.
