Of proposed electric propulsion schemes, including electrothermal, electrostatic, and electrodynamic devices, electrothermal arcjet appears closest to actual system; basic components are cathode, anode, and exit nozzle; typical 30-kw radiation cooled engine design considered is based on constricted arc configuration; arcjet mission that shows greatest promise is 24-hr communications satellite; circuit diagram of electrical conversion system for 30kw arcjet engine and launch packaging techniques for arcjet spacecraft designs indicated.
