For manned lunar missions, good hypersonic re-entry and subsonic landing characteristics will be critical; on basis of study, made at Republic Aviation Corp, it is found that pyramidal variable geometry configuration offers best solution; design has hinged wings that form integral part of pyramid shell but can be rotated upward to halve wing loading and double maximum lift-drag ratio for landing phase; re-entry parameters and landing characteristics.
