Nature of sonic boom problem is reviewed, and experimental evidence relating to Whitham-Walkden theory presented; theory is used to predict ground overpressures directly beneath proposed Concorde flight track; using work of P.S.Rao, over-pressure values up to 2.0 lb ft/sq ft are predicted for initial climb and acceleration, as opposed to 1.6 to 1.3 lb ft/sq ft for cruise; structural damage is thus unlikely, but until people are accustomed to booms, they will cause annoyance, especially in region 130 to 320 mi from take-off; minimum sonic boom for aircraft of given length, volume and total lift is also discussed; it seems that any significant reduction in sonic boom will mean increase in supersonic flight altitude or decrease in aircraft weight.
