Experimental and analytical results are reported for liquid drop shattering; breakup is observed to occur as result of interaction between drop and convective flowfield established by passage of shock wave over it; paper attempts to establish influence of parameters on rate of disintegration and on time required for breakup to occur; photographic, drop displacement and breakup time information is presented for range of conditions which involve shock waves moving at Mach numbers M8 equals 1.5 to 3.5 in air over water drops having diameters of 750 to 4000 μ; it is concluded that supersonic rain erosion, caused by impingement of rain droplets at high relative speeds on missile and aircraft surfaces, can be alleviated through proper aerodynamic design.
