Against background of certain basic VTOL concepts number of well known VTOL configurations are discussed; with equivalent flat plate area as common yardstick comparison of aerodynamic performance of these configurations is made; for ultra-short range pure and winged helicopter, although relatively slow, are viable solutions; for longer ranges and higher speeds, up to 500 mph, convertible rotor configuration is best; for still higher speeds, stowed rotor appears optimum; many other important aspects of these aircraft, such as weight, complexity, vibration, etc, have not been considered.
