Lockheed is producing prototypes of military version of Cheyenne winged-helicopter and is planning commercial model; aircraft has top speed of over 250 mph, yet it is highly maneuverable; it can operate in either of two modes -- vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) or short takeoff and landing (STOL), for lifting heavier payloads; Cheyenne is also capable of intercontinental flights, because it can travel nearly 2900 mi before it has to refuel; as military gunship it carries potent and sophisticated arsenal; commercial version could be solution to short-range air travel.
