Recent studies have considered potential missions, both civil and military, for hypersonic aircraft; these studies have indicated possible applications of hypersonic aircraft to such missions as space launchers and commercial transports and were encouraging in indicating potential promise; primary uncertainties for launch aircraft result from high development costs and uncertain traffic and are little affected by state of technology; hypersonic transport requires high development of technology in aerodynamics, structures and propulsion.
