Dec 1939: Rolling resistance determinations for 23 wheels, 6 steel and 17 pneumatic, at 3 loads on 4 road and field conditions; coefficients of rolling resistance calculated on basis of load nearest recommended capacity. Jan 1940: Effect of inflation pressure on rolling resistance; resistance of tires at five inflation pressures and three loads. Feb: Effect of outside and cross-section diameters on rolling resistance of pneumatic tires. Mar: Effect of wheel arrangement on rolling resistance; data on resistance of single, dual, and tandem arrangements of 6.00-16-in. tires when operated at loads of 500 and 1000 lb per tire on bluegrass. tilled loam, and loose sand. Apr: Effect of steel wheel rim shape and pneumatic tire tread design on rolling resistance; comparative tests of three 4 × 36-in. steel wheels with flat, convex, and concave rims; comparative tests of 6.00-16-in. pneumatic tire and 6.00-16-in. skid ring tractor tire; comparative tests of two 4.00-30-in. pneumatic implement tires, one with tread removed. May: Relative effects of steel wheels and pneumatic tires on agricultural soils; movement of soil particles; damage to field roads; adhesion of soil to wheels. June: Soil penetration tests as means of predicting rolling resistance; relation between penetrations obtained with two penetrometers and rolling resistances for two steel wheels and two pneumatic implement tires investigated for 17 road and field conditions; correlation between penetration and coefficient of rolling resistance. July: Measurement of loaded radii and distances of forward travel per revolution for all of steel wheels and pneumatic tires used in studies reported in earlier articles of this series; effective radii and slippages; slippage was approximately proportional to square of coefficient of rolling resistance. Aug: Value and cost of pneumatic tires; influence of specific conditions of road surface or wheel arrangement on rolling resistance; apparatus for measuring force of impact due to transport wheel striking obstruction on road surface; protection from shock; impact reactions of steel wheel and pneumatic tired wheel over obstructions; annual cost of tires.
