Measurements made of cooling on fronts of model cylinders in conventional cowling for cooling in both ground and cruising conditions; mechanisms of front and rear cooling are different; for front of cylinder, optimum fin\ill\ width was found to exist beyond which increase in width reduced heat transfer.
