In simple spur planetary reduction gears, ratios near 2:1 given relatively small planet pinion diameters and, accordingly, permit use of unusually large number of pinions; Wright 20-pinion 16:7 and 16:9 gears, now developed to 2000 hp, are described to illustrate advantages of multi-pinion design.
