Means for prevention of presence in cargo tanks of vapor/air mixture in proportions necessary to permit combustion, both during loaded voyages and "empty" or ballast condition; it is suggested that gas-freeing after discharge of cargo is best achieved by use of blower systems introducing fresh air to compartments, while during loaded voyage, problem is to prevent ingress of oxygen; system which permits both gas-freeing and gas-blanketing to be carried out with one set of equipment is described; layout diagram is included.
