In 1961, Ford Tractor Div planned introduction of new integrated series of tractors, designed for world-wide usage and optimum interchangeability of parts; feasibility study of developing new series of engines formulated one engine family with diesel and gasoline models without sacrificing basic requirements of one type to those of other; design program carried out with three organizations and final development of 3- and 4-cyl engines; basic features of cylinder blocks and heads; diesel engine combustion chamber is of open type, while gasoline engine has bowl-in-piston type; tabulation of interchangeability classifications and specifications.
