Space, ease of maintenance, and reliability have in common that they were formerly inherent in warships and are relatively new as development requirements; changes since World War II that have brought this about, and measures that are being taken to alleviate situation are discussed; as regards space, content has grown faster than hull, although ships are larger; there has been lack of accessibility to increasingly complex machinery and systems; reliability has succumbed to rapid pace of development and application of advances in materials and components.
