Drag begins to build up very rapidly at about 500 mph, reaches its most critical point between 760 mph (speed of sound) and 800 mph when flying at sea level, then fades away into normal pattern of supersonic airflow; once beyond speed of sound, it is believed that aircraft can be controlled as precisely as artillery and rocket projectiles at supersonic speeds, providing basic design of wing is modified to minimize effect of shock waves.
