Stiffened sheet covering, for example in seaplane hulls, may be subjected to bending moments that produce compressive bending stress in unsupported stiffener areas; critical value of bending moment is desired at which stiffeners of open section will buckle torsionally; solution introduces effect of elastic bending properties of sheet into stiffener buckling problem.
