First British transport built since outbreak of war in 1939 is high wing cantilever monoplane, characterized by large, square section fuselage; max gross weight of 63,000 lb; embodiment of number of Lancaster components in new design has greatly simplified manufacture; wing span 102 ft; oa length 78 ft; oa height 20 ft; powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engines each developing 1260 hp for take-off; fabrication is illustrated and described.
