Increased airplane weights are necessitating rebuilding of many existing runways; compacting subgrade material to considerable depth permits reduction in thickness of pavement or base course with attending reduction in cost; sheepsfoot roller with feet 18 in. in length out from drum which compacts 21 in. in one operation is illustrated and described; heavy pneumatic roller for top surface also described.
