Locomotive coal requirements of British railways after war will depend upon many considerations, but in this paper technical points only are discussed; ultimate policy must always be determined by market as well as technical considerations; features of ideal fuel for locomotives of present design; most important considerations are clinkering and ash, volatiles, calorific value, size and freedom of burning; future trends.
