Description of ballast cribber and rolling gage developed and used on Alton to help offset shortage in man power and to improve quality of rail laying work; ballast cribbing machine is used to lower ballast between ties, directly at rail seat, ahead of tie adzing machines, and two of rolling gages are used to gage rail while spikes are being set and driven; machines constructed largely of scrap or second hand parts and materials.
