Maritime establishment of United States from which postwar merchant fleet must be recreated consists of (1) older passenger ships, cargo ships, and tankers; (2) prewar U S Maritime Commission vessels, resulting from Merchant Marine Act of 1936, and (3) war built types; general particulars and character of these basic ships are given briefly; practically every type of oceangoing vessel is included, with few smaller vessels for coastwise and limited service illustrated.
