Power required for helicopter to take off or hover is about twice that required for cruising flight; investigation at Marquardt Aircraft Co shows advantages of "invisible" ramjet which opens for use during takeoff and hovering, and folds into rotor blade tip during cruise; weight penalty incurred by addition of 150 rotor hp; performance of helicopter with and without ramjet boost.
