Army (TRECOM) sponsored V/STOL research program is designed to demonstrate performance of V/STOL gas coupled, lift fan system and its compatibility with high subsonic speed aircraft; XV-5A design gross weight of 9200 lb was established to permit vertical takeoff at 95 F. 2500 ft altitude, control powers reserved, with lift-to-weight ratio of 1.05; propulsion system, designated X353-5 V/STOL system, consists of 2 gas generators, diverter valves, wing lift fans, and one nose lift pitch control fan; aircraft configuration tail design, and fuselage; performance and design development testing.
