Requirements for military V/STOL transport; design studies and performance estimates made for turbofan and turboprop with lift engine pods; turboprop tilt wing aircraft and helicopter; jet lift concept; 2 research aircraft under construction by Dornier-Werke, Gmb H; DO 31 highwing transport, powered by 2 turbofan propulsion engines of 9000 lb thrust each, fitted with single-sided rotating cascades for thrust vectoring during V/STOL; 10 Rolls-Royce R.B. 162 lift engines in 2 wing mounted pods are added to achieve true VTOL performance; DO 31-E is powered by 2 vectored thrust engines (Bristol-Siddeley Pegasus) and 8 lift engines (Rolls Royce R.B. 162).
