Study into effects of various levels of weathercock stability on directional handling qualities boundaries, defined in terms of angular rate damping vs control sensitivity, was undertaken using V/S TOL airborne simulator; visual flight task performed by pilots included hovering turns, in presence of simulated wind, and complete circuit terminated by steep angle, low speed approach to landing; synthetic turbulence disturbed simulator to produce realistic flight conditions and was found to be extremely important for meaningful results.
