V/STOL aircraft potentially offer much wider trade-offs in payload, range, and other performance characteristics than have been considered in discussions of relative merits of vertical vs short takeoff; maneuver, speed, and acceleration characteristics have extensive military application; modern high-speed cruise and STOL aircraft for military use are already paying for advantages of V/STOL flexibility, but lack control for effective and safe use of potential performance.
