Characteristics and capabilities of nuclear propelled carrier USS Enterprise are considered to illustrate what operations are like on nuclear carrier, how they differ from those on conventional ships, and whether realistic advantages are offered which justify additional cost; ship is 1123 ft long, has normal operating displacement of about 87,000 tons, is fitted with 8 pressurized water reactors; information is given on weapons systems, composition of Air Group, personnel organization, capabilities for launching and recovering aircraft, speed and other operational performance attained thus far.
