Position-velocity ephemerides of Venus and Earth- Moon system have been generated using special perturbation methods in which conditions at initial epoch are determined so that subsequent positions are in best agreement with Newcomb ephemerides in least-squares sense; ephemerides so obtained made possible 1961 Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) radar observations of Venus and were used in determination of published JPL value of astronomical unit; success of method led to development of ephemeris library system.
