To examine operational reliability of post-war-built main propulsion heavy diesel engine crankshafts in ships classed with Lloyd's Register, Society's records of reported defects for 10-yr period, 1953 to 1962 inclusive, were scrutinized and analyzed for engines of more than 1000 bhp; analysis covers incidence of cracked, broken or "slipped" shafts classified in relation to ranges of horsepower, types of crankshaft construction, position of machinery in ship and location of fracture. From paper before Inst Mar Engrs, Nov 1963.
